Orival Bento-Gonçalves
A native of Brazil, Dr. Orival Bento-Gonçalves came to the United States in 1994 to study at the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston. He has enjoyed much success in the United States as well as abroad on the opera and concert stages. His recent operatic performances include Colline in La Bohème, Leporello in Don Giovanni, Uberto in La serva padrona, and Claudius in Agrippina. Also Banco in Macbeth,Commendatore in Don Giovanni, Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte, Sagristano in Tosca, Zuniga in Carmen, Bottom in A Midsummer Night’s Dream,Swallow in Peter Grimes, Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor, Publius in La clemenza di Tito, Creon in Oedipus Rex among others.
On the concert stage, he has also performed the solo parts in such masterpieces as Handel’s Messiah, Mozart’s Requiem, Verdi’s Requiem, Haydn’sCreation, and Stravinsky’s Les Noces to name a few. As the winner of the Bidú Sayão International Vocal Competition in 2001, Dr. Bento-Gonçalves made his debut at Theatro da Paz, Brazil’s oldest opera house, in 2002 as Banco in Verdi’s Macbeth under the baton of maestro Patrick Shelley from Dorset Opera, England. Dr. Bento-Gonçalves received a doctorate of musical arts in vocal performance from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 2008.
